The Affluent Traveler Summer/Fall 2015 - page 117

Argentina’s culture, cuisine and city life are
as abundant as its natural attractions. Buenos Aires,
Cordoba, Mendoza, Bariloche and Salta are all
stunning cities, each worthy of a visit. Buenos Aires,
the capital of Argentina, is fast-paced and exciting.
Its floral displays, cafes and porteños (Buenos Aires
residents) are stylish and welcoming. The music
of Argentina inspires the passionate steps in tango
dancing. The country’s passion for soccer rivals any
of its competition. Add to that Argentina’s love for
parrillas
(steak restaurants), Argentinian wines and
Italian pastas and pizza, and it’s no wonder travelers
are flocking here.
Consider Abercrombie & Kent’s

Argentina (known as “the land of contrasts”) is a place
of wonderment. Super cool cities, endless Pampas,
Andean salt flats, massive Patagonian glaciers, deserts
sprinkled with cacti and the rugged peaks of the Andes
Mountains dot its landscape. The country also boasts
a spectacular Lake District and diverse wildlife, from
monkeys in its northern jungles to penguins tobogganing
into the icy South Atlantic.
The mighty Iguazú Falls in Northeast Argentina
is one of the most amazing and spiritually uplifting
sights on all seven continents. During the rainy season,
Iguazu Falls is 1.7 miles wide, and at its most strategic
vantage point, offers a 260-degree view of some 275
cascading drops.
On the far southern side of the country, another
of Argentina’s impressive sites is Perito Moreno
Glacier. Located in the Los Glaciares National Park
in southwest Santa Cruz Province, it is one of the most
important sites in Argentinean Patagonia. This 19-mile-
long ice formation is one of 48 glaciers fed by the
Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes
system shared with Chile. At 97 square miles, it is the
world’s third largest reserve of fresh water. Perito Moreno
is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are still
growing. It emits sonic booms as it sheds massive
icebergs the size of skyscrapers into placid Lago
Argenito. Less than two hours by bus from El Calafate,
it’s one of the most accessible ice fields in the world
and one of southern Patagonia’s main attractions.
