In this remote destination populated with penguins, blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises and marine iguanas,
Finch Bay Eco Hotel provides naturalist-led daily expeditions on land and sea, as well as upscale waterfront
accommodations and gourmet food.
FINCH BAY ECO HOTEL
Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The Galapagos Islands are among the world’s greatest
natural history destinations, and Finch Bay Eco
Hotel equals this status as the World’s Leading Green
Hotel, a prestigious title granted in the 2014 World
Travel Awards. Located 600 miles off the coast of
Ecuador, these volcanic islands host species found
nowhere else on the planet, so the hotel intends to
have minimal impact on the fragile environment.
Privilege and luxury here focuses on the unique
destination — the otherworldly landscapes, teeming
underwater world, and up-close wildlife watching
experiences among the fearless birds and animals. At
the resort itself, guests may share the beach with
marine iguanas, the swimming pool with a yellow-
crowned night heron and lunch with a Darwin’s finch.
The 27 rooms and suites have simple interiors that
showcase the lovely views, some with a Garden View
and somewithOceanView. They feature air-conditioning,
tile floors, Wi-Fi and a balcony with hammocks. Some
rooms interconnect, ideal for families. The hotel grounds
are planted with endemic flowers and plants for the
birdlife. The beach beckons beyond the gardens; Finch
Bay is the only beachfront hotel on Santa Cruz Island.
Core to the stay experience are the excursions
accompanied by naturalist guides around the island
or to other islands aboard the hotel’s private yacht.
Cruises might take in Santa Fe, South Plaza, North
Seymour or Bartolomé islands, and always include
snorkeling stops. Among Santa Cruz Island
expeditions are hiking in the Giant Tortoise Reserve,
snorkeling at Tortuga Bay Beach or bird watching at
El Garrapatero Beach. The Land & Sea Packages
include lodging, meals, transfers and excursions.
There are scuba diving packages, too.
At the hotel, guests can snorkel off the beach or
rent kayaks to explore the bay. The town of Puerto
Ayora and the giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin
Research Station are a short walk away. At the end of the
day, the poolside restaurant serves up more memorable
experiences — unique dishes created by Cordon Bleu-
qualified Chef Byron Rivera featuring ingredients
from his sustainable farms and own organic garden.
