The pounding water of
Iguassu Falls is deafening,
reverberating through my body and vibrating
every cell and nerve ending. The 254
thundering waterfalls with cascades rising
from 120 to 265 feet stretches out over two
miles on the Iguassu River. Thousands of
years ago, Iguassu Falls was a sacred place for
the indigenous Guarani Indians. Today, it is
considered one of the seven wonders of the
natural world. When Eleanor Roosevelt visited
she said, “They make Niagara Falls look like a
kitchen faucet.”
In the movie
The Mission,
Robert di Niro
plays a slave hunter and scales one of Iguassu’s
waterfalls as penance to the missionaries. My trip
is anything but penance. After seeing Iguassu
Falls, Buenos Aires and Patagonia, I would fly to
Rio to check out the beaches and learn the samba
even though I have two left feet. But first, I
planned to attempt the tango.
