Laguna Torre, a 2,164-foot-high lake on a moraine
near the base of Cerro Torre.
The Glaciers of Patagonia
Glaciers are everywhere in Patagonia. A boat ride
takes you to the 19-mile-long Perito Moreno Glacier
where you glide around icebergs the size of whales
and stop near the 200-foot high ice wall. Suddenly,
you’ll hear an explosion as loud as a shotgun blast; it’s
the sound of the glacier calving and you’ll watch huge
chunks of ice tumble into the water. I joined a guided
hike to Viedma Glacier where I donned crampons
(spikes to put over your boots for ice-walking) and
clomped around huge pinnacles of ice, deep crevasses,
and mystical ice caves.
You can also see the glaciers on horseback. A
gaucho from the Estancia Christina (a former cattle
ranch converted into a luxury hotel) helped me onto
the saddle of a sleek black horse. “What’s his name?”
I asked. “Corizon Perdito,” the gaucho replied. “It means
broken heart, because, look at his face. Does he not
look like a very sad horse?” We galloped across the
