ura Vida.
The literal translation is “pure life,” and the phrase is omnipresent in Costa Rica.
You hear it liberally sprinkled throughout everyday conversation — from a greeting, to a
wish of good health, to a description of a person’s mood, to an acknowledgment of a good
life. You see it in the smiling faces of the children in their tidy black and white school
uniforms. You feel it whether strolling along a stretch of sandy beach, soaking in natural
thermal waters, hiking through a lush rainforest or simply gazing upon the many
impressive volcanoes that dot the Central American country.
