n the road from the Keflavik airport, Iceland’s barren
rock-strewn landscape resembles the moon more than a winter
wonderland near the Arctic Circle. True glaciers cover a third of
the country’s roughly 40,000 square miles. Tectonic plates grind
just 35 miles from the capital city of Reykjavik. Surprise is always on
the horizon.
In Iceland there are abundant options to explore and unexpected
detours to excite visitors. On an island the size of Kentucky,
summer days are long, and winter is brightened by the Northern
Lights. It’s hard to choose the best time and place to visit. Here are
tried, true and new adventures to add to your list.
